Decades of experience
Are you looking for the best – great – responsible movers in Austin? There are many of us around, who have been doing it since the 1990’s or longer. I started Mighty E’s is 2003 and had started as a mover, in my hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1994. Austin became my home in 1996 to pursue more in music / art. I got a job at Strait music as a piano mover.. For 7.50 per hour! It was a wild experience for sure. My driver ( I was the assistant) was a comedic and athletic ‘redneck’ from Arlington. We are still friends to this day but coming from Nebraska it was a big shocker with many stories to tell.
I ended up going to work for 2 brothers that took over the account . They were on another level skill wise and I realized it could be a fairly lucrative business /job. We would do large pianos, both grands and uprights. Up stairs , down from a 3rd floor.. At times it got pretty dangerous with 750 lb pianos and old wooden staircases. I’m glad I had the experience with those guys, we still talk sometimes to this day.
Becoming more of a household goods mover
One of them suggested going to Apple moving and moving regular furniture, by the piece. He had worked there off n on and said it was solid. 800.00 a week was big money! I went over and applied and went to work. It was again quite a culture shock but I ended up clicking well with a driver a Mexican guy. He would ask me to help and we’d kick butt. I still remember him coming out of the store in the morning bringing me a donut haha. He actually gave me a little dog Sugar too. I think he’s still around moving as well from what I heard. It was good times there overall.
The jobs we’re all bid by the piece.. Stairs were extra, long walks were extra, every 100 feet I think. Regular sized boxes we’re a dollar each, and add-on’s happened regularly. We were all in great shape. 32 and 36 inch Sony Trinitron Tv’s, one man carries. Giant armoires up 2 flights with tight turns. Old big screen TV’s. I’m glad I got to experience it all. And don’t break anything! We were responsible for damages as well.. You really had to be sharp and stay aware as well as move quickly. I still will do Piano’s from time to time.
I think this mentality forged my already angst fueled work ethic which carries over to my work today. Even though most of the jobs I bid are done on an hourly basis, I still like to move quickly and carefully. My helpers all realize the importance of work ethic as well. I’m also conscientious of the time spent working and the final bill. I always like customers to be satisfied with the amount effort we put into their job. I always round down on time and take into consideration any lag time or a short lunch stop etc.
Full Service moves with packing
Some folks want movers to come in and prepare everything before the move. We can do this and I get supplies at reasonable rates. Texanbox.com is who I have used for a long time. I don’t mark up the cost and they have just about everything a person might need for a move. You can also just visit them if you need supplies for your own packing session. Depending on whether or not you go with having a mover pack you, here are some basic rates. A one bedroom apt usually takes anywhere form 90 minutes to 3 hours to pack. Depending on the time of year, a two man crew is 120.00 to 150,00 per hour. At times, I can do the packing alone, which reduces the hourly rate. A 3 to 4 bedroom house, with a garage and backyard items, can take the majority of the day. Some smaller houses can be quicker. Obviously a large house with children that has been lived in for years could be a two day process with a two man crew.
Basic packing options / tying up loose ends
Any job I go on, I bring large Gondola boxes. These are 50 by 22 by 28 inches and are triple thick cardboard. I load them up with walk in closet items, regular closets, cushions etc.. Anything that can be packed in there safely and transported. They are also great for garage and extra storage items. I usually roll them on 4 wheel dollies but they can be two wheel dollied as well, surprisingly, up or down stairs. Sliding them down stairs to the first floor works well too, being cautious of what’s in them and the walls etc.
There are other just straight packers around, that show up with teams of 3 and 4 people. This is what they do full time and can be really helpful. I/we can do it though, should you request this!
Local and Long distance Moving
If your looking to move to or from the Austin area, I do this as well! Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Lubbock, El paso… Pretty much any city or town in Texas. An average Dallas apartment move is usually 1200.00 to 1600.00. To or from Houston is 950.00 to 1400.00. San Antonio, 700.00 to 1000.00.. I base the charge on the Mileage and the hourly rate. The hourly rate is only during the loading and unloading. Some jobs are small.. Actually I get quite a few calls for efficiency apartments or just deliveries and this affects the overall price, benefiting the customer. If someone wants a flat rate or a do not exceed price, this is available as well as long as the details we discuss are accurate. it’s hard to know exact details sometimes but within reason I definitely will do flat rates.
For larger houses, when a 2nd truck is needed, I have access to this and can get extra blankets and whatever other equipment might be needed. In my experience, completing a move well, with as low stress as possible is based on proper preparation from every one and giving everyone enough time and space whenever possible. Sometimes, things pop up short notice or something is forgotten scheduling wise. I have almost 30 years experience and can at least help to navigate such situations. Even if it’s just a phone call to offer my input with no expectations beyond that.
Loading and unloading services only
The picture above is of a load we did for some ladies of a U-haul. They weren’t able to get many blankets so we made do with what we had and it all made it safely. Having around 3 dozen blankets .. 2 at a minimum for smaller jobs and 4 , 5 or 6 dozen for house moves is ideal, to really protect your items well. U-haul, Penske and some of the shipping container companies have rental blankets. If there is a problem with this though, places like Harbor Freight and Northern tool sell them as well. Even Texanbox has them I believe.
Having 100 to 150 feet of rope is necessary as well to tie of the load in tiers or layers. It’s not always easy to gauge what size of container or truck to lease for your move. A small one bedroom a lot of times can fit into a 16 foot truck. The height in these smaller trucks though is lacking and this can make it difficult for taller armoires or even sofas if they would need to be stood up, in order to have room for everything. Building a tier on one side of the load, with dressers and boxes, is a good method I’ve found. This gives you a place to elevate the sofa and still utilize the space well underneath. The Uhaul 2 ft truck or a POD 16 ft are decent for space for a one bedroom apt or maybe 2 bedroom ..In the 2o foot truck more than likely. The PODS have a different feel and places where you can tie off at. 22 foot Penske trucks, all the way up to the 26 footers, either U-haul or Penske are capable of holding a 3 bedroom house. Especially the 26 foot U-haul.
Small loads
There are smaller containers as well out there for just small apartments or 40 boxes etc.. PODS has an 8 footer I believe and here is another link to a place. I’ve loaded and unloaded several ABF containers over the years and they seem really practical. they have a bit more height in them too. Even UPS or FEDEX or a courier company might be an option to check out. Also, Thumbtack and similar apps have people that may fit the bill.
